My fun experience helping my daughter prep for her High School Ball

Being a parent to a daughter who will be attending her first school ball presents all kinds of interestingly daunting challenges. I guess most moms to daughters who’ve been through this can relate, am I right?

The moment I learned when and where my daughter’s ball will be, I started looking online for gown inspirations.

My daughter and I are quite different when it comes to clothes. I am usually the “kikay” one, while she, on the other hand, leans more towards the rougher/rugged side. When she became a tween, I found it difficult to pick her clothes anymore because she has developed her own style already.

The only time I actually get to choose her clothes is during formal events, like this particular occasion — her Junior High School Night called, “Le Bal”.

The preparation and stress that came with choosing a gown was overwhelming as the school had so many restrictions on the dress code: no black dresses, shouldn’t be strapless, no plunging neckline, no high side, no back slit, and no floor length gown/train. That gave us very little room to play around.

Preparing my daughter for her ball

Because of my experience as a first time mom to a teen attending her ball, I wanted to share with you how everything went. Maybe you can pickup a few tips along the way which might help you, especially if you’re a mom or a parent who will be going through the same experience I’ve had.

Gown

After going through so many designs online and shortlisting ateliers, we decided to go to Cathy-Mora Capistrano because she had that perfect gown for Isabella in her preferred color – midnight blue. It also followed the school’s strict dress code.

The entire gown was age appropriate.

ACCESSORIES

My daughter and I both agreed that when it comes to her accessories, we would take the “less is more” route.

I made her use my diamond heart earrings, her own necklace design which we had customized at the SM Department store, and a simple Swarovski bracelet.

As for her evening bag, we got a simple black glittery clutch that went perfectly with her gown.

SHOES

Since my daughter is not fond of wearing heels, we went to our go-to local shoe store, Via Venetto. I just knew that we will be able to get that perfect pair of shoes for her dress.

We got a beautiful pair of Becca Black Patent which wasn’t too high nor too fancy. It was also slightly padded which would help make her comfortable all night.

MAKE-UP and HAIR STYLIST

One of my trusted MUAs is Je Fazunila I’ve tried her already before during a shoot and she’s absolutely amazing! Plus, she uses an airbrush which is what Ella, my daughter, specifically requested for.

Je brought her partner hair stylist, Nicole, who did a fantastic job on my daughter’s hair. She had big curls and half of her hair was pinned on one side using the crystal pins that we bought to match the embellishments of her gown.

Here’s the final look.

HOTEL

We decided to get a room for the prom preps at Fairmont Makati Hotel because it also happened to be the venue of the ball.

We got a 2 Double Non-Smoking room on the 6th floor.

The room had floor-to-ceiling windows which was perfect for the natural light to enter the room while my daughter was having her hair and make-up done.

I fell in love with the spacious marble spa bathroom with a separate shower stall, toilet and tub.

I also love that Fairmont Makati Hotel is located in the country’s premier business and lifestyle district which is walking distance to the city’s premier shopping complex and restaurants.

To kill time, my son and I took advantage of their fitness center.

I was happy to know that Fairmont Makati has state-of-the-art fitness equipment. I took advantage of it in order to fully maximize my workout program.

The next morning, we headed to Spectrum for breakfast. But because the hotel was fully booked, we already expected that the queue might be challenging. Sure enough, it was.

After a few minutes, one of the staff approached us and informed us that we can have our breakfast at Mirèio at Raffles instead.

Mirèio serves authentic Provençal and French inspired cuisine with a French chef who was very hands-on.

I ordered Scrambled eggs with black truffle jus and chives (Ouefs brouillés parfumés au jus truffe noire, ciboulette). It came with parisian mushrooms, hash browns and crispy bacon.

It was the perfect meal to kick off the day. The flavors of every ingredient were distinct and flavorful. It complemented the eggs that were served fresh and fluffy. This may have been one of the best breakfasts I have had in quite a while.

You can also indulge on their assorted cheeses, charcuterie, bread, jams and cereals while waiting for your entree.

It is also worth mentioning that the view from Mirèio is the Makati cityscape. Overall, it was truly a pleasant experience; delightful breakfast, a great view, wonderful interiors, relaxing ambience, and very attentive staff.

It goes without saying that I really enjoyed my stay at Fairmont Makati. Their service is truly impeccable from check-in to check-out.

All’s well that ends well! The anxiety and trouble preparing for my daughter’s Junior High School Ball were well worth it! Especially after seeing how beautiful she was that night.
