When Hot Star opened its first branch in Macapagal, I felt bad that I wasn’t able to make it to their media launch. Since then, I’ve always been curious as to how their 12” large fried chicken was cooked and seasoned — and if their chicken really is as big as diners rave about.
Fast forward to last year when Hot Star opened a branch ‘round my neck of the woods (Shaw 500 Zentrum to be exact). It was only then that my family and I were able to try it. Finally!
Hot Star is the #1 chicken shop in Taiwan and the creator of the larger-than-your-face crispy chicken. In Taiwan, it is just a small kiosk at Taipei Shilin Night Market. But here in the Philippines, Hot Star stores are spacious, air-conditioned and cozy… Far from their Taiwan set-up.
Large chickens and more at Hot Star!
I immediately noticed the colors of the store – blue and yellow – which best reminded me of lemonade drinks (Yes, blue lemonade is a thing). Little did I know that Hot Star actually does serve blue lemonade! The attractive colors alone were enough to pull me into their establishment.
Since Hot Star is a self-service establishment, I immediately went to the counter and perused their menu to check out what’s new. From their Hot Star Large Signatures, to sides and desserts, I just wanted to have a taste of everything! Takaw mode? LOL!
This Hot Star Crispy Large Chicken variant actually does span the entire area of my face! Since this dish is fried upon ordering, it was really crispy, moist and had a beautiful golden brown exterior.
We had the red hot variant which gives off that slooooow burn. You can either eat it as is or with their gravy (especially if you think the spice is too much for you). Either way, it tastes great. My husband enjoyed this and he just couldn’t stop eating it, especially when he partnered it with Hot Star’s sticky rice.
The Hot Star Original Large Chicken on the other hand was perfectly cooked as well. It had a nice crunch and texture, plus the salt & pepper seasoning was just right.
By the way, Hot Star uses the no cutting technique to retain the juiciness, giving you moist chicken meat.
I also tried the Hot Star Sweet and Sour Crispy Fish and it truly did not disappoint! Trust me when I say that you will get hooked on this specialty. It’s probably enough to turn non-fish eaters into converts! It was juicy, tasty and crispy! Either eat it using a spoon or fork or better yet, use the sleeve, hold on to it and nibble on it slowly while enjoying the crunchy sound and delightful taste.
Hot Star serves group meals that are perfect for you, your family, friends or colleagues. The Hot Star Group Meal priced at Php 816.00 is so friendly on the pocket because this food package can actually be shared by 4 persons.
Or how about some Hot Star Chicken Cut-Ups that come in boxes of 8 or 16? Perfect for larger groups, whether dining-in or to-go.
Box of 8: Php416 | Box of 16: Php825
But never leave Hot Star without trying this delicious Chicken Skin! It’s absolutely crispy and sinfully good. I’d still eat this over and over again!
Pair any of your Hot Star favorites with these thirst quenching Ice Crushed drinks that have been my fave as of late. Even their soft serve ice cream tastes like their ice crushed counterparts.
Almond, Black Gulaman or Combination
Did you know that Hot Star serves burger as well? Not just any burger… Fish Burger! So, if you happen to be a non-meat eater, this is for you. See! At Hot Star, no one gets left out – there’s something everyone to enjoy.
Made you hungry, didn’t I? Don’t worry. There’s a good number of Hot Star branches around. In fact, there’s most likely a branch near you this very minute. So, go ahead and give in to your craving. Hot Star will not disappoint.
